How we test
Our BBQ tasting panel fired up the grill to cook an impressive line-up of 18 veggie and vegan burgers from the leading supermarkets and pioneering plant-based brands. They were searching for those that offered innovative flavour combinations, a satisfying texture and well-balanced seasoning for your bap.
But was our winner a branded buy or a budget supermarket burger? Read on to find out...
1
BEST VEGAN BURGER
Beyond Meat Beyond Burger, 2pk
Score: 86/100
Our winning meat-free alternative tastes every bit as authentic as a traditional burger – even achieving a tell-tale BBQ char and smoky aroma. The flavour is equally convincing, with rich, umami notes and "spot on" seasoning.
2
RUNNER-UP BEST VEGAN BURGER
Co-op GRO The Bhaji Burger, 2pk
Score: 80/100
Packed with veggies and bold, bhaji spices, our panel loved the chilli depth and complex aromatics at play in this vegan patty and gave high praise to the chunky texture, too. Serve with Kachumber salad and yoghurt raita for a winning warm weather lunch.
Available in-store from 11th May.
3
BEST SPICY VEGAN BURGER
Tesco Wicked Kitchen BBQ No Pork Burgers, 2pk
Score: 78/100
Jackfruit proves a worthy stand-in for pulled pork in these fiery burgers. They're a little dense in texture, but our panel praised the "sweet and lightly smoky BBQ sauce," and "subtle sourness" from the jackfruit filling. For those that like a little kick between their bap, they're hard to beat.
4
BEST VEGETARIAN BURGER
Waitrose & Partners Chilli Halloumi Burgers, 2pk
Score: 77/100
Our panel couldn't wait to get their hands on these halloumi burgers after their sweet and spicy aroma filled the testing kitchen. There's all the expected salty deliciousness from the halloumi, with a pop of vibrant sundried tomato and chilli for balance. We'll be serving these in wraps with fresh salad all summer long.
Available in-store and online from 11th May.
5
BEST TEXTURE
Better Naked Spicy Bean Burger, 2pk
Score: 74/100
Combining earthy sweet potato, black beans, sweetcorn and fresh red pepper, this is a medley of textures and offers a very satisfying bite. Our panel loved the addition of green jalapeno and ancho chilli, which added depth and subtle spice to the classic veggie burger base.
6
BEST FRESH HERB FLAVOUR
GOSH! Beetroot Burgers with Carrot, Kale and a Hint of Mint, 2pk
Score: 74/100
These perfectly pink veggie burgers certainly look the part, but how did they taste? Well, our panel loved the balance of earthy beetroot and mint freshness, which would pair wonderfully with a fresh Greek salad and tzatziki.
7
BEST BUDGET VEGAN BURGER
Richmond Meat Free No Beef Burgers, 2pk
Score: 73/100
With their meaty appearance, grill lines and smoky aroma, these veggie patties are a close replica of the real deal. The texture is firm and satisfying – perfect for piling into a brioche bun with all the fixings – while the protein-rich soya mix impressed with its well-balanced seasoning and bold umami flavour. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
8
JOINT BEST BUDGET VEGAN BURGER
ASDA Plant Based Meat Free Burgers, 2pk
Score: 73/100
Despite the speedy cooking time, our panel was impressed by the satisfying grilled appearance on these meat-free burgers. The base is a combination of roasted red onion, oyster mushrooms, veggie suet and red pepper, which gives the burgers a rich, umami flavour and pleasing chunky texture. We reckon these would be delicious with a dollop of caramelised onion relish to bring a touch of sweetness to the smoked patty.
